Early last week, the Millvale Community Library welcomed a new addition to our family--a beautiful new corner plant stand to adorn our library. This was just one of the things our summer campers made at the Society for Contempoary Craft in Pittsburgh's Strip District.
In addition to making our new plant stand, teen apprentices worked side-by-side with professional artists to learn techniques in pottery, woodworking, and various types of metal smithing. The teens created beautiful clay pottery, jewelry from precious metal clay, and an elaborate rain chain to install in place of the traditional downspout on the library's garden shed.
"My favorite part was using the torch." Said teen apprentice, Jonny. "I like how you got to turn it on and use it for soldering the copper wire. That was really fun."
Summer camp programming finishes up this week, with a focus on Community and Public Art. The library will be showcasing the work of all of our summer campers at our End of Summer Showcaseto be held Saturday, August 20 at the Library. Our Maker programs will return for the Fall, with Maker Wednesdays, Small Fry Fridays, and much more!
